I started this site several years ago out of a passion (maybe you could call it an obsession) over self-defense/personal protection. I was reading everything I could find about guns, personal crime, safety, and protection. I invested in several guns, took some classes and started to talk to other like-minded people. I wouldn’t say that I ever became a gun nut. For me, it was never about the equipment or tools. It was always about what those were bringing me (protection/peace of mind).
In the last year, my passion for this subject has lessened. While I am still concerned about my safety and the safety of my family, I moved to the country and do less business in the city. I guess I am less concerned about bad things happening out here when your driveway is a 1/4 mile long. Despite that, I still carry my Glock 27 when I go into the city on appointments and I make sure the doors are locked at night.
One of the things that this research and thoughts on safety has bubbled up in me is my absolute requirement/duty to be the protector/provider/leader of my home. God put man at the head of the household and I want to fulfill my Godly duties. To me, that means that not only do I need to protect my family from the bad people, but I also need to put food on the table and be prepared for anything else life, people, government, or the weather might throw at us. I slowly became a prepper.
It sounds funny to call myself that. It doesn’t sound as dorky as saying you are a Trekkie (Star Trek nut), but it does make people look at your different/funny. I don’t tell everyone what I am doing (especially my parents who would think I am nuts), but I take this role very seriously to protect my family. Just like handgun safes, I jumped right in and started to read, watch and learn. I found some great people on Twitter at the hash tag #Preppertalk. I read just about every link they have recommended and researched products and thought about how/if I would use them.
I have come to realize that each prepper needs to create something the equivalent of a mission statement to define why they are doing this and what they are preparing for. I am not concerned about space aliens or comets or the Earth’s magnetic poles reversing or a super volcano under Yellowstone. If I had to define my mission statement, it would be: “I am concerned about a very rapid decline in civilization/services resulting from a governmental takeover, social unrest, financial collapse, and/or terrorist attack. My prepping is my duty as the head of my home to keep my family safe and protected during those/that event(s).”
There is so much out there on the Internet about prepping. Lots of “experts” telling you what to do. I am no expert. I am just an average guy with an average income and ability. With that said, I thought it may be interesting to keep a blog of my successes and failures along the way. While this current site was built for my passion for pistol safes, I think the content can be expanded to include this passion of prepping.
I hope you will enjoy.
